What will be the theme for drupa 2012? By Barney Cox
In the past it was dominant trends such as inkjet, JDF, digital and CTP that defined previous drupas. This time, there will be more than one theme creating an “& drupa” (print & apps, print & online, print & tablets, print & mobile) for some, while change through transformation and transition will have a greater resonance for others.
Vital to this will be vendors’ business development tools as well as defined processes and innovations and how they deliver ROMI – return on marketing investment.
The perception of print is itself transforming from a slow moving waste-creating medium, competing with on-line content, to a value added, effective and emotive form of communication. drupa will highlight the increased emphasis on the purpose and business of print as well as display the latest technology demonstrating better tools are an essential way of meeting the latest challenges.
While digital, and inkjet in particular, will be in the limelight it’s important to remember just how much printing is still produced using analogue processes, and isn’t ready to go digital. As such focus in offset press development has been to improve automation, which can reduce operating costs. Also reducing makeready and changeover times through automation is crucial for getting work through the press hall quicker while improvements to drying will eliminate any dead time.
Web-offset will also see developments in reducing waste, labour and ultimately the cost per volume of pages and the inkjet concepts unveiled in 2008 will be delivered this drupa, including the rapid developments in continuous feed inkjet.
No matter what printing processes are employed integration of ordering, managing, producing and distributing is increasingly crucial to meeting demands for lower cost, more effective and faster to market printed products. Once integrated, they are easier to automate, improving workflow and increasing the number of jobs possible
Then there are the benefits of using the two technologies together – either in hybrid printing systems or by running both analogue and digital presses and routing the work to the most appropriate process.
Essentially the show is your drupa - be there to form your own opinions and take away what is relevant to your business.
