During the last months, the focus in tablet publishing has shifted from content development to the central issues of pricing models, digital distribution and customer relationship management. New e-stores are taking off; heavyweights of the industry are positioning themselves in this new area, from pure players like Google-Android and Amazon, to publishers starting initiatives of their own as well as device manufacturers.

With new platforms come product opportunities in areas new to the news industry, such as utility apps. HTLM5 is heating the debate over whether the future lies in native apps or the open web. New story telling styles for these tactile devices is another challenge. Last but not least, more and more publishers believe that developing multi-platform subscription offerings will increase users willingness to pay for digital journalistic content. Last year, WAN-IFRA’s 3rd International E-reading & Tablet Conference in Hamburg gathered 260 participants that joined to share their first experiences, only a few months after the release of the first iPad. Apple was, and still is, the front-runner in the tablet market, but a solid competition has emerged since then. An iPad 3 is already in the pipe for the end of the year; the Kindle is prospering and there are many discussions on the quality of the Android tablets recently released on the market. Staying on top of the accelerating path of mobile reading innovation is absolutely key for future business development. |
